ANTIQUE CHINESE QING DYNASTY 19TH CENTURY BLUE BROCADE SEMIFORMAL COURT IMPERIAL DRAGON ROBE JIFU

Decorated with woven polychrome silk and couched gold threads, the body and upper sleeves are decorated with celestial landscape: nine large dragons (one hidden), clouds, mountains, and waves, and li-shui pattern in gold brocade against a blue tabby ground; scattered with the Eight Precious Things of Buddhism, Xi (happiness) character roundels, cranes and bats; the neck band and cuffs with smaller dragons, waves and clouds; the sleeve extension decorated with triple rib-pattern against black tabby brocade ground. A semiformal court robe, likely for festival events, for high-ranking nobility and members of the imperial household.
