ANTIQUE CHINESE QING DYNASTY EMBROIDERED SILK RED-GROUND LADY’S WEDDING DRAGON ROBE

Calf-length garment with center-front opening fastened with five gilt metal ball-and-loop toggle buttons, straight sleeves ending in square cuffs, slit sides. Decorated with embroidered polychrome silk and couched gold threads, the body and upper sleeves are decorated with celestial landscape: eight large dragons, clouds, mountains, and waves, and li-shui pattern in gold brocade against a red silk satin ground; scattered with the Eight Precious Things of Buddhism, cranes and bats; the neck band and cuffs with auspicious plants, butterfly and floral patterns and ladies engaged in daily life. This is a classic wedding robe, in its quasi-official imperial dragon imagery and festive red ground.
